DR YOUNGJOON GIL is president of Samsung Information Systems America which is located in Silicon Valley. He oversees the whole operation of applied research and development in IT areas such as home networks, digital media, storage, wireless networks, etc. He represents Samsung Electronics in America for technology collaboration with major companies and for industry-university relations.

Dr. Gil has more than 20 years experience in technology management – all with Samsung – where he has been central to the design of central R&D systems and long term technology strategy. Prior to assuming leadership of the San Jose operation in 2005, Dr. Gil was vice president of the Chief Technology Office, Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT) – Samsung’s multidisciplinary research center. He was responsible for the strategy and execution of next generation technology, knowledge management systems and information systems and intellectual properties management.

Before this, Dr. Gil was a member of the Chairman’s Executive Staff Office where he managed various R&D management agenda and contributed to the design of Samsung’s innovation system.

He served as a member of the national committee for 2025 technology and science long term vision of Korea,as well as a member of the strategy committee for 21st industry development of Korea, and as a member of IRI (Industrial Research Institute), U.S.A.

Dr. Gil joined Samsung in 1981 as a Project Engineer. He took a lead in optimal design, computer aided engineering and computerized project planning.

Dr. Gil received his Ph.D. in Innovation Management from KAIST, Korea. Dr. Gil wrote several articles and papers about the national innovation system and Samsung’s case study.
