Enjoy The Internet at Your Fingertips!

With Samsung’s See’N’Search technology in your living room, relevant Internet media and information are at your fingertips!

  1. Watch TV normally as you normally would, until you are interested in knowing more.
  2. Select a suggested topic from the current program and receive recommendations for entertaining related Internet content and media.
  3. Now you can quickly and easily pull up Internet information and media about whatever or whoever you are watching.

Instant Interactivity from Existing Content

The Internet has become a hugely popular source of entertainment and information. But, it assumes the user is actively searching for content on a PC. Transferring this experience into the living room has not been popular since traditionally information is brought to the user by the broadcaster rather than being actively sought.

Past technologies have tried to push custom authored content to living room for certain programs. But this has not been widely adopted due to the extra overhead of authoring and maintaining the special authored contents throughout the content ecosystem and re-runs.

Samsung’s See’N’Search technology overcomes these problems by automatically suggesting existing Internet media and information related to the existing programs users are already watching!

See’N’Search only uses the existing program guide and closed caption metadata that is present for most programming. So there is no need for special metadata injection, authoring or maintenance by program producers and service operators.

See’N’Search refers users to existing Internet content (HTML, Internet video). So there is no need for dual authoring and existing Internet assets can be leveraged.

Combined See’N’Search’s innovation (a) greatly minimizes the need to manually search out related content, (b) removes the need for interactive content authoring; leaving the user to directly watch or surf relevant Internet content.

How It Works

See’N’Search resides on the TV or set-top box as with other middleware and system software. However, the See’N’Search engine monitors the closed captions and program guide of the current program.

  • As it monitors the program’s contents it uses lightweight natural language technologies to determine the topics that are being discussed.
  • Common or important topics from the program are then suggested automatically to the user if they press the ‘More Info’ button.
  • These topics are displayed in the See’N’Search UI along with Internet information or media that See’N’Search has determined from the internet, such as through automated searches.
  • The user simply selects a piece of content from any particular topic and See’N’Search takes them directly to that content. Simple!

For example, as the user watches the latest news headlines, CES is discussed along with Samsung products. When the user presses ‘More Info’ See’N’Search recommends: (1) “CES” and (2) “Samsung” as current topics. Selecting “Samsung” gives news results related to Samsung and links to www.samsungusa.com along with other results.

To avoid disturbing other living room users, the See’N’Search UI can also be displayed from the TV or set-top box to any connected devices in the living room, such as Wi-Fi enabled phones, tablets or laptops. The user can then personally surf related Internet content without disturbing the family.
